The SXSW Day Shows
Bear with me for a moment… I have been very stressed (work) and a tad bit blue (work stress + house etc etc stress) this week. On my way home, I was perusing the iPod for good music to cheer me up and de-stress me. I chose the Essex Green. Listening to The Long Goodbye, I was reminded that I wanted their new record, Cannibal Sea. I decided to go by the record store on my way home and pick it up. On the way to the record store, I thought about seeing them at SXSW. Thinking of SXSW reminded me that I never finished writing this post.
Without further ado, one month ago…
We started Thursday, March 16th, off by going to see Saturday Looks Good To Me (unplugged). Before they started playing, we saw someone wearing the Ladybugs t-shirt that Clint designed a few years back. We think that it was the guy in the Galactic Heroes. That was exciting!
After Saturday Looks Good To Me, we ventured down to Home Slice to see Irving play two songs.
Then we headed over to Factory People to see the Mates of State. We misunderstood and thought they were playing a day show, but they were just acting as DJs, playing tunes off their iPod. Since we were there, Clint bought some t-shirts from the American Apparel pop-up store.
Thursday night we went to Town Lake to see, more like listen to, Spoon. I really am not fond of big outdoor shows so I looked at my feet.
Friday, March 17th, was a good day. We started the day off by seeing Saturday Looks Good to Me again (plugged in). Both Thursday and Friday we heard a few new songs and a few old songs.
Then we ran over to Spider House to see The Hidden Cameras. The Hidden Cameras were my favorite thing about SXSW this year because they were so much fun! They made the audience interact and play goofy and they danced danced danced. Fun fun Canadians! I wish they would come back and play a full show outside of SXSW someday. Texas Voodoo.
After the Hidden Cameras, we headed over to Pok-e-Jo’s to catch the Merge Records showcase with The Essex Green, Britt Daniel, and Camera Obscura. It was really awesome to see Camera Obscura. Geez were those ladies cute! It is quite charming to hear a seemingly shy Scottish gal say, “We all have to pee very bad, but the queue for the toilet is very long.”

One last little tidbit… I will never know for sure but it is possible that Elijah Wood was standing behind us at the Merge show for a little while. At one point I turned around and thought to myself, “Hmmm… That guy looks familiar.” It was not until the next day when I was looking at pictures in the paper and saw a picture of him with Harry Knowles that I realized he may have been the person behind us. Good times.
