Contemplations

Posted by Dixie on Jun 29 2005 | Food, Random/ Life

Anyone watching The Real World Austin? Ew, those people. I am watching, of course, to see how they portray this lovely (albeit way too hot) town. Contrary to the infamous words of the first episode, they did not own this town. Chumps.

The mail just arrived and although I should be packing for my trip since I left work early and all, I am playing with my new fun Carrotbox glass bands. At least my new accessories arrived in time for the trip! I was worried they would not.

I had a falafel wrap for lunch and it was yummy.

People Can Be Good

Posted by Dixie on Jun 25 2005 | Animals

I am part of an animal group at work and yesterday we held a combination bake sale and rawhide drive. The deal with the rawhide drive is that the city animal shelter is very, very close to the park where the Fourth of July fireworks occur. Fireworks really stress animals out and the dogs at the shelter are in kennels outdoors. The shelter aims to give each dog a bone to chew on during the fireworks because chewing helps to relieve the stress caused by the loud noises and bright lights of fireworks. Also, the dogs that get super stressed out have volunteers sit with them as babysitters to help calm them.

Not only did we receive a huge amount of rawhides and chews during the drive, but we raised nearly $500. The money may end up going to a different, more needy shelter since we exceeded our goals as far as the rawhides and chews are concerned. I was amazed at people’s generosity. I mean, I give first to animal charities but I know that not everyone feels the same way. We had people buying a bag of cookies or a piece of cake and giving us a $20 bill. It was a truly happy day for me. Yay!

PSA: If you have pets that go outside, please keep them inside on the Fourth of July. You don’t want your pet running away because they are stressed out!

I am off to see Debbie Stoller at Book People shortly.

Tired of Squirrels Yet?

Posted by Dixie on Jun 17 2005 | Animals

I took soooo many squirrel pictures yesterday, but I fear that you may be growing tired of my squirrel friends. I assure you, some of the pictures are cute, cute! It’s like they know to pose for the camera.

There are at least 2 females and 2 males that we are feeding. And they have names: Scraggly (she’s scraggly), Priscilla (she’s prissy), Nacho (he has a notched ear, helpful for identification), and Wiggles (he wiggles his tail when he takes food from your hand).

So far we know the following:
Squirrels like: pecans, grapes, apples.
Squirrels do not like: brazil nuts, peanuts, walnuts.

Picky, picky.

There is also a bizarre lime green fungus. My plan was to document its odd growth habits but I need a new crop to pop up because the current crop has completely mushroomed out, and though odd in color, the fungus is not as interesting once open as a mushroom.
