I have returned from the land of the archivists. A roudy and crazy bunch, those archivists. Actually, I had a lot of fun, heard some nice presentations, attended a workshop, went on possibly the worst ghost tour ever, stayed in a very nice hotel, and ate a lot of food. Clint joined me in San Antonio on Friday for the ghost tour. Erm, I think any comments on that tour are better left unsaid. Although Clint says he is going to be “ghost writer” for my blog and do a review of the tour. We shall see if he follows through.

I am happy to be home though. We promptly returned to Austin and ate Mexican food. One would think that San Antonio would offer up lots of Mexican food, but we really only ate it one night and my coworker and I had to beg for vegetarian food. Once the vegetarian option arrived, it was plenty yummy. Anyway, back to San Antonio. I really think there are two groups of people: 1. The people who love San Antonio and all the touristiness of the Riverwalk and 2. The people who really think the Riverwalk and San Antonio in general are overrated. I fall into group 2. I like the historical buildings in downtown San Antonio, but I think the Riverwalk is overpriced and over-touristy. I much prefer to live in Austin.

Anyway, I’m home now. I still have a Beulah review with pictures for you.

I’ll be away for a few days, faithful readers. Feel free to peruse some exciting links.

Oh, and interestingly, the episode of CSI: Miami last night must have sparked curiosity in a lot of people because I am getting more hits today for one search phrase than I have ever gotten for any search term or phrase before. It must be somewhere between 50 to 100 hits by now. People must be very disappointed when they arrive here instead of somewhere more, uh, interesting. I am happy that at least I saw the episode so that I know why there are so many searches for this particular phrase. Otherwise, I would be very confused.

Yes, I am purposely not posting the phrase so as not to attract more uninvited guests.

M’Kubwa

You may recall that back in December, Clint and I visited the Houston Zoo and learned about Mac the Gorilla. I have been worried about him since our visit since he was elderly and feeling under the weather back then. Well, we were saddened to read that he passed away last week at the tender age of 51.

On a happy note, check out those pictures from his 50th birthday. Oh, if only we could all have such grand 50th birthday parties!

Goodbye M’Kubwa.

Beulah Mania

Did Clint tell you that he made a Beulah poster for his final silkscreening project? Of course he did not. Here it is:

The poster is even approved by Wembley the cat.

We plan to go to the show tonight… just in case they decide to break up again.

Lots of Stuff – So Little Time

Une. Last week, Clint and I went to the From Bubblegum to Sky in-store. From the Eenie Meenie website: “Special thanks to the people at Waterloo Records for helping to make an awesome in-store performance!” Yeah, he seemed to really like that whole free beer at in-stores thing that they’ve got going. He kept talking about it in between songs.

Deux. Clint and I went to see Super Size Me last weekend. It was great — funny, disgusting, frightening, engaging, and just overall well done. I am so happy that we finally got to see the movie. The director’s girlfriend is a vegan chef and has a great attitude about his whole McDonald’s binge. In fact, she’s quite funny and an asset to the flick. There are a lot of funny Texas moments because, you know, bigger is better in Texas. Apparently, that includes bodies. Of the 9 times he was asked to super size his meal during the whole 30 days, 5 were in Texas.

I think that every American should have to watch this documentary. The results of the experiment on the director’s body are quite frightening. After we saw the movie, Clint and I went grocery shopping. Ew, food seemed so icky to me after that movie. I only wanted fresh fruits and veggies and no sweets. I was checking everything for sugar content. After perusing all the juice labels, I settled on some OJ. Hey, nobody’s perfect.

Trois. I have been gardening a lot. It’s that time of year. Look for a full garden update soon. I planted tomatoes a few months ago and they have been doing so great! Last night, I harvested my first yellow pear tomato. See:

I promptly ate it in a salad with lettuce obtained from the farmer’s market last week. And for my main entree, I ate black beans, rice, quorn tenders, and potatoes from my coworker’s garden plot. mmmm… I’m still realing from Super Size Me – must eat very healthy, organic foods.

I also planted some beans:

I have many things waiting to be planted: curry, basil, a black-eyed susan vine for my topiary, two ice plants, a black-eyed susan plant, and some more cantaloupe plants. Anyone want some? I have 3 extra baby cantaloupe plants.

An unecessary flower garden shot:
