Sunday Baking

Sunday Baking, originally uploaded by young and with it.

On the left we have a Mini Apple Pie human treat and on the right we have an Elvis Pupsley dog treat.

I recently purchased The Organic Dog Biscuit Cookbook and I have big plans to try out many of the recipes. The Elvis Pupsleys are the second recipe I have made from the book and the dogs seem to like them an awful lot. I taste tested them and they taste pretty OK! The first recipe I tried was a basic carob chip cookie recipe and my taste test said they were pretty bland, but the dogs seemed pleased with those too.

I have not taste tested the apple pie human treat yet. I bought the mini pie mold yesterday for the bargain price of $3.99. The mini pies were enjoyable to make, but I think I am going to have to work on the filling as it looks pretty dry. Such a small amount of filling goes into the mold that it probably needs to pack a mighty punch.

Meep Needs a Home!

Posted by dixie on Dec 12 2009 | Animals

Meep Needs a Home!, originally uploaded by young and with it.

Last Sunday, Clint and I were on our way to the Wheatsville Arts Festival when we pulled up to the light at Manor and Airport. There was something in the road. The something moved! A gray kitten ran into the middle of the intersection. Clint jumped out to try to catch her. She ended up crawling on the tire of some guy’s car. Fortunately, he did not drive away. Clint caught her even though she was throwing a fit and apparently trying to get hit by a car. She was a tiny, 1.5 lb kitten running across what is essentially a six-lane road at that intersection.

We took her to a vet that was open on Sundays. They told us that she was anemic and dehydrated, but they did not seem very concerned. Fast forward a couple of days and the kitten stopped eating. We took her to our regular vet and found out that she was very, very sick. Our vet thinks that she was starving to death when we found her and that her body was shutting down. She was severely anemic and dehydrated with very low blood sugar. She required subcutaneous fluids daily and syringe feeding every 2-3 hours.

We did not know if she was going to make it for a day or two, but now it looks like she will turn out to be a feisty little gal. She is finally eating on her own and things are looking up. Great news!

Here’s the thing, we have a house full of pets. As much as I would love to keep her, it is probably in everyone’s best interest to find her a home. Is there anyone out there in Austin land who is very responsible and would like to adopt a kitten? We have invested quite a bit into this gal and she deserves a super great home that will keep her indoors, safe and healthy for her life, which could be up to about twenty years.

The low-down: Meep is an approximately 8 week old calico kitten, FeLV/FIV negative, looking for a permanent home. Can you give her a home for the holidays?

Apartment Therapy + Callie

Posted by dixie on Oct 21 2009 | Animals

Neko is not supposed to be on the coffee table.

Check out our Callie dog on an Apartment Therapy post! I must admit, it was kind of awesome to see her unexpectedly in my RSS feed. All of our animals like to sit in the Poang chair. I even made a Flickr set a while back to illustrate the Poang chair love. I have been meaning to get a Bemz cover for an old Ikea PS chair and now maybe the Poang chair too.

Speaking of Callie and pit bulls, this weekend is Pit Bull Awareness Weekend, sponsored by Love-A-Bull and featuring John Garcia of Best Friends. We’ll be there! Clint even designed some of the t-shirts so why don’t you stop by Zilker and buy one for a good cause?
